Obituary

Milton Owens, Sr. a beloved and gracious father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather and the patriarch of the Owens family left his earthly body on December 21, 2021. He is now at home with his Lord and Savior. Through his lifetime he developed a work ethic that has impacted his entire family and network of friends. He loved people and was a mentor and intermediary to many in Lockhart & Florala, AL as well as Milton, Florida. On October 18, 1920, Milton was born to Wash and Laura Owens in Lockhart, Alabama. He was the youngest of four children. Milton graduated from Covington County High School. In 1942, he was drafted into the military served one tour of service in Europe and North Africa. After a successful tour of duty from 1942 to 1945, he returned to Lockhart where he worked as an insurance salesman until landing a clerk position in the supply chain on Eglin Air Force base where he would later be promoted to a Supply Chain Supervisor. He would eventually become a housing inspector for the military and retire from Eglin Air Force base after 35 years. Throughout his earthly journey, Milton engaged in civic life through becoming the first African American councilman in Lockhart, Alabama as well as Covington County. He also served as a leader in the State of Alabama Democratic Party as well a mentor and coach to young boys in the Lockhart and Florala community. He served as a Mason, member of the Landmark Lodge 199, and a deacon for many years at Macedonia Baptist Church in Lockhart, Alabama. In 1941, Milton married Mary Ann Hooks and had 12 children, two of whom preceded them in death. Milton and Mary Ann were married for 54 years until her death. Milton is preceded in death by his eldest daughter Mildred Hewlett and granddaughter Lynn Owens. Milton is survived by his remaining ten children, Annie Holmes (Ralph*), Lillian Senior (Lewis), Queen Harris, Mammie Montgomery (Willie), Robert Owens (Mary Ann), Jimmy Owens (Voncile), Sylvester Owens (Clarice), Jeffery Owens (Diane), Herman Owens (Angela) and Milton Owens Jr., as well as four generations of grand children. After the death of Mary Ann Owens, Milton would later marry Rosa D. Daniel, and became stepfather to Sylvia Foster and Stevie Frazier. He also leaves many grand nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends who will miss him as well as (adopted daughters, Ruth Gibson and Angel Gibson and the Harris Sisters).
